🎤 Expat Interview

Welcome to our expat spotlight section.

This is where we interview both new and long-term expats in Buenos Aires and ask them to share their tips and recommendations.

Here’s the today’s interview:

What’s your name, country of origin, and how long have you been in Buenos Aires?

Rachel Gremillion, United States, since February 2023.

What brought you to Buenos Aires, and how was the initial adjustment process?

I moved to Buenos Aires with my three dogs to live with my long-distance boyfriend (now fiancé). I’ve lived outside of the US before, so I was ready for the adjustment period.

It wasn’t too bad! I had to get used to the city noises and coming from a smaller town.

We live in Villa Urquiza and it’s a great neighborhood.

What's been the most challenging aspect of living in Buenos Aires?

The most challenging aspect for me has been the language barrier. I didn’t speak any Spanish when I moved here and I’m still struggling to learn.

I’m very self-conscious!

And what has been the most rewarding aspect of living here?

I have a much better work/life balance here and there’s always something to do, whether you’re into music, food, wine, nightlife, art, history, sports, or outdoor activities!

What's your favorite local restaurant, bar, or cafe, and why?

There are so many to choose from!

I enjoy the cocktails at Puerta Uno, a hidden bar in Belgrano. We usually go there after catching a movie at the Multiplex.

Sometimes we’ll grab a burger at The Food Truck Store.

We tend to go to Jackson’s Holy Smoke in Urquiza a bit because it’s so close to our apartment and I like the ribs and caprioskas.

And if we get delivery, it’s usually burgers from Pinto Bajon. One costly meal but well-worth it was at Trescha. It was an amazing experience.

What hidden gem in Buenos Aires deserves more recognition?

Maybe not so hidden but worth appreciating is the street art. It’s fantastic. I highly suggest taking one of the street art tours offered.

What advice would you give to new expats in Buenos Aires?

Don’t be afraid to visit some of the less touristy neighborhoods in the city!

Thanks Rachel for agreeing to this interview!

💡 Did You Know?

The word "Che" in Argentine Spanish is a popular exclamation used to catch someone's attention or express surprise.

It gained international recognition due to its association with the iconic revolutionary Che Guevara, often referred to as "El Che" by his comrades.
