🎤 Expat Interview

Welcome to our expat spotlight section.

This is where we interview both new and long-term expats in Buenos Aires and ask them to share their tips and recommendations.

Here’s the today’s interview:

What’s your name, country of origin, and how long have you been in Buenos Aires?

Carolina Murgi, from Brazil, and I´ve been living here for almost 11 years (time flies!!!)

What brought you to Buenos Aires, and how was the initial adjustment process?

Mi pareja💕 I met him the first time I came to Buenos Aires. I was already looking for another country to move and this relationship was the best excuse to give it a try and see if I could adapt to the city. Since then I have loved living here and I have the privilege to say that I am where I want to be!

What's been the most challenging aspect of living in Buenos Aires?

I believe in feeling like a local (which is impossible, pero bueno). Brazilian and Argentinian cultures are similar but they are not the same and it took me time to realize the differences and to adjust & adapt. Life is about changing and evolving but still, it´s hard to modify your culture and personality, sometimes you feel like a stranger till you get used to your new version.

And what has been the most rewarding aspect of living in Buenos Aires?

Be able to live in a Latin American city with some safety. I am from Sao Paulo and in my city it´s so dangerous to go out at night or to take the bus alone and these are the things I can do here in BA, although I know it´s not 100% safe it’s much safer than Sao Paulo.

What's your favorite local restaurant, bar, or cafe, and why?

Bellagamba, it´s a bodegon that you can order on the counter, has cheap options, and is of good quality. It´s my choice when I don´t have much time and money!

What hidden gem in Buenos Aires deserves more recognition?

I belive the Teatros Independentes. After 10 years I found out about the huge offer of theater plays with cheap tickets and high quality. La movida teatral here is amazing and very affordable for those looking for art & culture options.

What advice would you give to new expats in Buenos Aires?

Don´t stay in Palermo, it´s expensive, cheto and made for tourists.

Thanks Carolina for agreeing to this interview!
